Walking helps me step up – By Susana – Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪
As a psychology master’s student, life can sometimes feel overwhelming. Between deadlines, responsibilities, expectations, and the constant pressure to keep up, there are moments when my mind feels crowded and exhausted.
During one particularly stressful period, I started taking regular walks outdoors. At first, I simply wanted some fresh air. But those walks soon became something much more important. I noticed that whenever I felt anxious, tense, or emotionally drained, walking helped me find my balance again. The simple combination of movement, fresh air, and nature created a sense of calm that I struggled to find anywhere else.
As my feet moved, my thoughts slowed down. Problems that seemed urgent became easier to manage. Emotions that felt overwhelming became easier to understand. Walking gave me space to step away from screens, expectations, and noise, and reconnect with myself.
One lesson has stayed with me more than any other. Not every problem needs to be solved immediately. Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is keep moving forward, one step at a time.
I often return home from a walk feeling calmer, clearer, and more grounded than when I left. The challenges are still there, but they no longer feel impossible. For me, walking is much more than physical activity. It is one of the simplest and most powerful ways I know to care for my mental wellbeing.
